This conversation is with professional golfer and defending Lilac City Invitational Champion, Vinnie Murphy. Vinnie competes in professional events throughout the Western half of the U.S. and is aspiring to qualify for the PGA Tour.
How did the rest of your season go following your victory in the 2018 Lilac?
“After the Lilac last year I went and played in the Long Beach Open, then headed out briefly to the Dakota’s tour. I played in two events and finished 4th and 12th. I competed in the web.com Tour Qualifying School at Southern Dunes, shooting 66, 75, 67, 75 and missed qualifying for the tour by just 4 strokes. I plan on trying again this year and seeing what happens.”
What do you like most about the Lilac City Invitational?
“The course was in great shape, and has tons of risk-reward holes. You can lay back and play patient or press when you need to make up some strokes. I shot 71- 71 the first two rounds last year, and wasn’t near the leaders going into Saturday’s round. If the tournament was only three days, I don’t win. The Lilac is the best bang-for-your-buck professional tournament around. You guys run a great tournament and it’s a great warm up for the season, it’s honestly the best tournament in the area that’s open to professionals. “
What is the daily life of an aspiring golf professional like?
“A normal day involves waking up early, grabbing a work out, breakfast, getting to the course by 9:00, and practicing till 3:00 . I don’t beat balls at the range I just play golf, like 18 holes almost everyday. I also just started working with a trainer who focuses on golf specific exercises. “
